The honest minimal list
I have supervised apprentices for the best part of eighteen years, most of that in food factories where tools get wet, dropped, and quietly borrowed. By month three, every single one of them was carrying roughly the same dozen things. The ones who struggled were never the lads and lasses with cheap tools. They were the ones who had spent a fortune on a 90-piece kit, half of which never left the van, while missing the one thing that actually matters in year one: a proper voltage indicator and the habit of using it properly.

VDE screwdrivers: the one place not to cheap out
Insulated screwdrivers made to the VDE standard are individually tested for work near live parts up to 1,000 V. You will be taught to isolate everything, and you should. But the whole point of insulated tools is that they protect you on the day the isolation was not what you thought it was. That day comes for everyone eventually, usually courtesy of a borrowed neutral or a mislabelled board.
The set I point every apprentice at is the Wera Kraftform VDE screwdriver set: a mix of slotted, Pozi and Phillips covering the vast majority of domestic and commercial accessories. The tips last, the handles are comfortable across an eight-hour second-fix day, and you will still own them in year ten. Budget VDE drivers from reputable brands are tested to the same standard and are safe. The difference is that cheap tips round off, and a rounded tip in a chewed terminal screw is how heads end up being drilled out at half four on a Friday.
Cutters and pliers: Knipex, and I will not be argued with
Your side cutters will do more work than everything else in the bag combined. Stripping back twin and earth, trimming conductors, cutting cable ties, snipping band-it, opening your lunch. Cheap side cutters develop a gap of light between the jaws within months, and from that point on they fold fine strands instead of cutting them. Buy the Knipex VDE diagonal side cutters in 160 mm and you will never think about side cutters again, which is exactly what you want from a tool.
Alongside them, a pair of Knipex VDE combination pliers covers gripping, twisting and heavier cutting. Some sparks barely touch their combis; others use them all day. You will find out which sort you are, but you need a pair in the bag either way.
Wire strippers
Old hands will tell you to strip everything with a knife, and you should absolutely learn to, because one day you will be up a ladder without your strippers. But on a long day of terminating, a decent pair of C.K automatic wire strippers is faster, kinder to your thumbs, and far kinder to the conductors. A nicked conductor is the sort of thing a good supervisor spots and makes you redo, and quite right too. Avoid the very cheapest automatic strippers; the ones that grab inconsistently will nick cores worse than any knife.
Knife, tape, torch and bag: the save-money pile
A fixed-blade Stanley-type knife for sheathing, a 5 m tape, a pencil, and a head torch. No brand on any of these will make you a better electrician. The head torch is the sleeper pick here: you will spend a surprising amount of year one in lofts and ceiling voids holding things for other people, and doing it hands-free with light on the job beats a phone torch in your teeth.
For carrying it all, get an open-top tote. Cheap, light, and you can see everything at a glance. The wheeled tool cases and loaded backpacks can wait until you actually know how you like to work.
Levels
A torpedo level now, a 600 mm level later in the year when you start setting out your own containment and accessory runs. This is genuinely where you save money. Any torpedo that reads the same when you flip it end for end is accurate enough for back boxes and bracketry. The posh German levels are lovely, and they can wait until someone else is paying you a proper wage.
Your first tester: a voltage indicator, not an MFT
If you take one thing from this article, take this. The first skill of your career is safe isolation, and the first tester you buy is a two-pole voltage indicator that meets HSE guidance note GS38: shrouded probe tips with minimal exposed metal, finger barriers, and properly protected leads. Paired with a proving unit, it is the kit that lets you prove a circuit dead before you put your hands in it. Prove the tester on the proving unit, test the circuit, prove the tester again. Every time, for the rest of your career.
My pick for a first two-pole tester is the Fluke T110. Clear indication, properly shrouded probes, tough enough to survive being dropped off a steps onto a factory floor, and a switchable load that helps deal with ghost voltages on long parallel runs. Pair it with a Martindale PD440 proving unit and keep the two of them together in the same pocket of the bag, always.
Two things a voltage indicator is not. It is not a multimeter: a general-purpose meter has too many ways to lie to you when proving dead, from the dial set to the wrong range to auto-ranging displaying phantom readings, and many of their leads fall short of GS38. And it is not a volt stick: a non-contact tester is a handy toy for guessing which way a cable runs, and it is never, ever proof of dead. What NOT to buy in year one
- A multifunction tester. Serious money, it needs annual calibration, and you will not be signing certificates for years. You will do your dead and live testing on the firm's calibrated instrument, supervised, which is exactly how you learn. When the time comes, usually around third year, read our multifunction tester guide. Not before.
- The 90-piece "electrician's tool kit". Padded out with tools you will never use, and the six tools you use daily are the worst versions of themselves.
- Power tools. The firm supplies them, and until you have used a few drills in anger you have no idea what you actually want to own.
- Specialist gear. Crimpers, ferrule kits, torque screwdrivers, cable rods. Buy them when a job demands them, or use the firm's.
- A tool vest or giant wheeled case. You will look keen and feel daft.
One exception to the frugality: buy decent knee pads. Your forty-year-old knees will thank the apprentice who spent the money.

The pattern is simple: the closer a tool is to your safety or your daily speed, the higher up the table you buy. The further it is from both, the less the label matters.
How to stage the purchases
Nobody expects a first-year to turn up with everything, and buying it all at once is how people end up with the dreaded 90-piece kit. Stage it.
Before day one: VDE screwdrivers, side cutters, strippers, knife, tape, pencil, head torch, tote. That is a genuinely complete starting kit, and it should cost you roughly a first-year week's wage, not a month's.
Months two to three: combination pliers, torpedo level, and, once you start carrying out isolations under supervision, the voltage indicator and proving unit. That tester pairing is about the same money again, and it is the best money in this whole article.
Months six to twelve: water pump pliers, a 600 mm level, a hacksaw, and whatever the work keeps demanding. My rule for apprentices has always been the same: the third time you borrow a tool, buy it. Twice is circumstance. Three times is a pattern.
Year two and beyond: your own power tools if you want them, and eventually the MFT conversation. Not yet.
FAQ
Do apprentices have to buy their own tools in the UK?
Most employers expect apprentices to turn up with basic hand tools, and many issue a list much like the one above. Some firms and training providers offer a tool allowance or starter kit, so ask before you spend. Power tools, access equipment and test instruments beyond your own voltage indicator are normally the employer's responsibility.
Can I use a multimeter to prove dead instead of a two-pole tester?
No. Safe isolation should be done with a dedicated two-pole voltage indicator meeting GS38, proved against a proving unit before and after the test. A multimeter has too many failure modes for this job: wrong dial position, wrong range, phantom auto-ranging readings, and leads that often do not meet GS38.
Are cheap VDE screwdrivers actually safe?
If they are genuinely VDE marked and bought from a reputable supplier, yes, the insulation is tested to the same standard as the expensive ones. The premium you pay for the likes of Wera is tip durability and comfort, not extra electrical safety. The real risk with rock-bottom marketplace listings is counterfeit marking, so buy from a wholesaler or an established retailer.
When should I buy my own multifunction tester?
When you are regularly involved in inspection and testing and working towards signing your own certificates, typically late in your apprenticeship or once you are qualified. What tool bag should a first-year get?
