Best Work Lights for Electricians UK: An Honest Guide

What actually matters when choosing

Start with your battery platform, not the light

Eighteen years in food production taught me one thing about work lights: the best light is the one with a charged battery in it. If you're on Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 18V XR or Makita LXT, you already carry charged packs everywhere. A light that clips onto those packs never has a flat internal battery, never needs its own charger clogging up the van, and runs all shift off the 5Ah you keep for the combi drill.

A standalone rechargeable light, however good, is a separate thing to remember to charge. I own several. They're all flat right now. That's the review.

So the decision tree is: platform lights first, head torch second, then a dedicated area light only if you regularly light whole rooms, and a 110V flood only if site rules demand it.

Runtime claims: read the small print

Every manufacturer — premium and budget alike — quotes runtime at the lowest output setting with the biggest battery they sell. "Up to 24 hours" usually means "24 hours on the dim mode you'll never use, with a 12Ah pack you don't own". On full chat with a 5Ah pack, most 18V lights give you somewhere between two and five hours depending on output. Plan around that, not the box.

The honest way to think about it: a light drawing serious lumens is drawing serious watts, and watts divided into your pack's watt-hours is your runtime. No brand has repealed physics, whatever the packaging says.

IP ratings on budget kit: healthy scepticism required

This is where I'll be blunt, including about our own gear. When a £15 light claims IP65, treat it as "splash resistant on a good day". Genuine Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita lights are tested to the rating printed on them and will survive being rained on, dropped in the mud and slung back in the van. Budget kit — ours included — should be treated as showerproof at best. I've had cheap "IP65" floods let water past the lens gasket after one wet morning.

If your work is outdoors in all weathers, that alone is a reason to pay premium money. If your work is indoors — boards, voids, plant rooms, domestic rewires — the IP rating barely matters and the budget kit argument gets much stronger.

When premium is worth it

Simple test: do you use a work light every working day? Then buy the branded one. The difference isn't just durability — it's optics and colour quality. Milwaukee in particular makes a big deal of light colour and it's not just marketing: under a poor-quality LED with a green or blue cast, distinguishing a brown core from a black one, or grey from blue, in the back of a crowded consumer unit is genuinely harder. When you're swapping a consumer unit with the main switch off and the whole house dark, your work light is the lighting installation. That's not the moment for a flickery £12 special.

If you light your work occasionally — you're mostly in well-lit commercial units, or you're a first-year building a kit on apprentice wages — budget kit is the rational choice, and upgrading later costs you nothing because the batteries carry over.

Battery-platform lights (18V mount)

This is the category that's changed the game. A compact light with an M18/XR/LXT foot, sat on a pack, angled at the job — that's now the default electrician's setup, and rightly so.

The premium option. Milwaukee's M18 lights are, in my opinion, the best lighting range of the big three — from small pivoting floods you can hang off a magnet or clip on a pack, up to full stand lights that will do a whole plant room. Build quality is superb and the light colour is the best going. DeWalt's 18V area lights are close behind and the obvious pick if you're already on yellow. The Makita DML805 deserves a mention because it runs off either an LXT pack or the mains, has a proper hanging hook, and has survived on more UK sites than I can count — it's almost the default site light in some firms.

The honest budget option. We sell two M18-pattern lights in the SparkBench shop, and here's the straight version of where they fit. The battery-mount LED work light with USB is £10.99. It clips on an M18-pattern foot, throws enough light for a board, a loft hatch or under a sink, and the USB port will top your phone up off the pack — genuinely handy on a long dead-test day. It is not a Milwaukee. The plastics are lighter, the optics are cruder, and there's no red-tools warranty behind it. What it is: a very cheap way to put a second or third light in the bag, so there's always one on the pack in the van while your main light is on the job. At this price, buy two and stop carrying lights back and forth.

Step up to the 35W M18-pattern battery floodlight we sell at £40.99 and you're into small-area-light territory — enough output to work a garage or a decent-sized room. Same honesty applies: for daily outdoor abuse, the genuine article is better and you should buy it. For an indoor sparky who wants proper light without the three-figure price of the branded equivalent, it's a lot of light for the money.

One caution that applies to all third-party platform accessories: the quality risk with cheap battery-mount gear is almost always chargers, not lights — a light is a simple, low-draw load. But don't make a habit of running any pack until it's stone dead in a budget light; take it off when the output starts sagging.

Rechargeable tripod and area lights

If you regularly light entire spaces — commercial fit-outs, ceiling grids, plant rooms — a dedicated area light on a tripod earns its keep. Head height matters more than lumens here: light coming from above your eyeline stops you working in your own shadow, which is the actual problem with every light sat on the floor.

The branded platform tripod lights (Milwaukee and DeWalt both do them) are excellent and share your batteries — same logic as above. Standalone rechargeable units from the likes of Unilite are decent and often charge over USB-C, but you're back to owning another battery you have to remember to charge, and their internal packs age faster than replaceable tool packs.

My genuine advice: most electricians don't need this category at all. A platform flood on a scaffold tube clamp or magnetic mount, positioned high, does the same job with the batteries you already own. Buy a tripod light when you find yourself lighting rooms weekly, not before.

Head torches

The most underrated item in the bag. Testing in a dark riser, tracing cables in a loft, reading a wander lead in a cellar during an EICR — both hands free, light exactly where you're looking. If I could only keep one light, it'd be a head torch.

Premium: the Petzl Swift RL is the benchmark — the reactive mode that adjusts output to what you're looking at sounds like a gimmick and absolutely isn't; it stops the torch blinding you off white walls and paperwork. The Ledlenser H7R Core is the other serious contender, with the focusable beam Ledlenser are known for. If a head torch lives on your bump cap every day, buy one of these two and don't look back. This is a category where premium is simply better: beam quality, comfort, and — crucially — they hold output rather than dimming to nothing halfway through a job.

Budget: the BORUiT GT30 motion-sensor head torch we sell is £15.99, charges on USB-C, and the wave-to-toggle sensor is more useful than it sounds when your hands are covered in flux or you're gloved up. It's a proper working torch, not a camping-shop toy. Is it a Petzl? No — the beam's less refined and the strap's more basic. But at a quarter of the price it's the right first head torch, and the one I'd point apprentices at.

Corded 110V site floods

If you work under principal contractors, this category isn't optional — most UK sites have mandated 110V centre-tapped (55-0-55) or battery kit for as long as I've been in the trade, and your lovely 240V garage flood stays in the garage. The reduced voltage means an earth fault exposes you to a much lower voltage to earth, which is the whole point on a wet, chaotic construction site.

Defender's 110V LED floods are the sensible default here — they're built for site abuse, they're everywhere in the UK hire and merchant chains, and LED has killed off every reason to keep the old halogen units (which ate lamps, drank power and cooked anything within a metre). Buy LED, buy the yellow plug version, and keep it in the van even if you're mostly on battery kit — some sites will still want to see corded 110V lighting for fixed illumination, and a flood that runs all day off the transformer saves your packs for tools.

For everyone else — domestic and light commercial — skip this category entirely. Battery kit has made the 110V flood a site-specific tool.

The setup I'd actually buy

  • On a battery platform, daily pro use: one branded platform area light, one branded compact flood, Petzl or Ledlenser head torch. Buy once, cry once.
  • On M18 batteries, watching the pennies: our £10.99 battery light (or two), the 35W floodlight if you want real output, and our GT30 head torch. Whole lighting setup for under £70, upgradeable later.
  • Site-based: all of the above plus a 110V LED flood.

And whatever you buy, remember lighting is safety kit, not a luxury. Good light is the difference between spotting the nicked insulation and missing it — and between proving dead confidently and squinting at a voltage indicator in the gloom.

FAQ

Do I legally have to use 110V lights on site?

Reduced low voltage (110V CTE) is the long-standing HSE-recommended approach for portable kit on construction sites, and in practice most principal contractors mandate it — or battery-powered kit — as a site rule. Domestically there's no such requirement. Check the site induction; the site rules are what you'll actually be held to.

Will a third-party M18-pattern light damage my Milwaukee batteries?

Very unlikely — a light is a simple low-current load, which makes lights the lowest-risk third-party accessory going (unlike cheap chargers, which I'd avoid entirely). The sensible precaution is not to repeatedly run packs completely flat in any budget device. Your tool warranty is unaffected by what you clip a battery into in normal use, but the light itself carries no Milwaukee warranty — you're buying on price, knowingly.

How many lumens do I actually need?

Fewer than the boxes suggest, positioned better. A few hundred lumens at the right angle beats thousands bouncing off the wrong wall — position and beam quality matter more than the headline number, which is usually measured on a boost mode the light can't sustain anyway. Rough guide: head torch for close work, several hundred to around a thousand lumens for a room, and the multi-thousand-lumen stuff only for large areas and outdoor site work.

Is a head torch enough on its own?

For fault-finding, testing and inspection work — honestly, almost. It's the one light that's always pointed at what you're doing. But for installation work you want the area lit, not just your eyeline, or you'll be working in tunnel vision all day. Head torch plus one platform light is the practical minimum kit.
